Ok so not so sure this story will be nearly as funny in print as it is when I tell it aloud but I will certainly try.
So it was a little early but during the weeks before Thanksgiving, we had started talking about Santa coming 'soon' and about being good. I was trying to get the kids to be "nice" and get the kids thinking about what they might want to ask Santa for.
So one day, the Target Toy Catalog came in the mail and the kids were looking through it with Daddy and pointing out things they might want to ask Santa for.
The kids saw scooters and immediately said that they wanted scooters. Parker said he wanted the Buzz Lightyear Scooter(or as he says it Buzz Yightyear). Sydney said she wanted the Disney Princess scooter.
Well it was before Thanksgiving but the Target catalog came with some coupons for the scooters, so I went on a Monday after work to pick them up. I was so excited because this was the one BIG GIFT they really really wanted.
As soon as I got home, I showed them to my Mom. She reminded me to get them out of there before Wednesday when she would be driving my car to take the kids to the library. Of course I would have them out by then!
Later that night, Patrick, the kids and I were sitting down to dinner. Patrick said he was thinking about going to get some firewood as it was the first cold night of the season. I agreed and asked him to take the kids with him so that I could clean up the kitchen.
When they got back from the store, Patrick pulled me aside and told me, "Parker knows about his scooter." OH NO, I thought. He couldn't explain any further at the time and by the time the kids had gone to bed it slipped my mind. Until the next morning, when the first thought of the day was, Christmas is ruined!! Patrick explained that as the kids were climbing back into the car at Home Depot, Parker quietly said, "Can I ride that sometime?" Patrick was taken a back and asked him what he was talking about. "The Buzz Yightyear scooter" was Parker's response. Patrick brushed him off with a "I don't know what you're talking about". Sydney chimes in, "What is Parker talking about?" Patrick replied with " Nothing." It was dropped and that was that. Until....
So the next couple days go by and he says nothing. It is driving me crazy because I want to know what is going through that mind of his. I knew that there was no way he had forgotten and I had come to terms with the fact that we would not be able to pass off the scooter as a gift from Santa. So what was he thinking?
On Thursday evening, it was just the kids and myself eating dinner. During dinner, we started talking about magic and things that are magical. I thought what a great segway to Santa. So I reminded the kids that soon we would be sitting down to write their letters to Santa. I asked them what they might ask Santa for. Sydney responds, "Baby Doll." Parker says to Sydney, "Don't you want a fast bike like mine?" Then Parker went quiet and anytime Parker is quiet you know the wheels are turning. He then looked at me and simply said, "Maybe someday soon I can ride my scooter." My response, "What scooter are you talking about?" Parker, "My Buzz Yightyear scooter." Me, " I don't know what you are talking about, Buddy." Parker, "Yea, my Buzz Yightyear scooter in the back of the car." Me, "Whose car?" Parker, "Your car. Here, let me show you." He grabs my hand and starts to lead the way to the garage. Sydney, "Can I come too?"
We get to the back of the car and I open the liftgate. I picked up both the kids and let them climb through the back of the car. I picked up a little Buzz Lightyear backpack that was sitting back there and said, "Maybe you saw this?" but Parker was on a mission and was searching all through the car. Sydney tired quickly, got out and ran into the house. Finally, Parker decide he was done looking and got out too. As we were walking back into the house, I said, "Wow, Buddy, you must have had a really good dream!". Parker, "No I didn't. It wasn't a dream. Quiet for a second and then, "Maybe you hid it in the house because it's supposed to be a surprise." Quiet again for a second(wheels turning again). Then, "No, maybe you put in the attic?. Yea that's it, you put it in the attic."
WHAT???!!!!
Thank goodness I was walking ahead of him because I swear my jaw hit the floor. I was speechless.
~~
The kids had never been in the attic or seen us hide anything in the attic.
They may have seen us pull camping gear and halloween decorations out but nothing else so no idea where he came up with the idea but he was right.
